I got email a few days ago asking “Dear Erin, do I REALLY need to use a pre-cleanse? Does it really make that big of difference??”
I thought it was such a GREAT question, that I decided to dedicate an entire blog to it!
Every woman wants even, clear, beautiful, glowing skin! Right?!
Having glowing skin you want to show off (instead of cover up with make-up) is way better than a good hair day in my book!
Right now there’s sooooo much hype than ever about “miracle” ingredients and must-have products.
Blue algae, micro-needling, vampire facials… I’m looking at you.
So why all the hype? Because every woman in the world wants the same thing… NOT TO LOOK OLD.
Not to pop your vampire facial bubble, but the truth is, the most crucial step in any skincare routine is NOT the “fancy stuff”.. it’s CLEANSING.
Yep. Your least favorite part is the most important.
Most people either rush through their cleansing step, use products that strip their skin during cleansing, OR the most heinous of all skincare offenders.. a lack of cleansing.
i.e. the people who sleep with their make-up on. You know who you are! Linda, I’m looking at you.
When you don’t completely remove makeup, dirt, debris, sweat, and dead skin cells during cleansing, OR if you use the wrong cleanser for your skin (causing redness, overproduction of oil, lack of hydration, premature aging, acne, etc)…
Your skin will look dull and tired.
You may even be able to see remaining makeup, dirt, etc, when you dry your face with a white towel.
Or you’ll wake up in the morning bearing an uncanny resemblance to Alice Cooper… proof your cleanser of choice isn’t doing the trick.
Bottom line… without properly cleansing your skin, the rest of your skincare routine is a mute point. Sorry Brenda, your $200 miracle serum isn’t going to do crap without a clean face. A clean canvas is a requirement in order for your other skincare products to be effective.
Traditional cleansers (gel, bar, clay, glycerine, etc) aren’t on your skin long enough to make a difference and on their best day, only remove surface level build up.
As for cleansing wipes… they’re not going to do the trick, sister. A makeup removing wipe isn’t going to effectively dissolve bacteria, makeup, or any of the other junk that builds up IN and ON your skin.
Like I said, without properly cleansing your skin, the rest of your skincare routine is a mute point. Applying moisturizer on top dirty skin won’t allow your skin to properly breathe OR repair itself while you sleep. And those are essential ingredients to beautiful glowing SKIN.
So this is where Pre-Cleansing comes in! For over a decade, I’ve used an oil based pre-cleanse to ensure a fresh, clean, even complexion. So when I created my own skincare line, SKIN, I knew that the pre-cleanse was going to be an integral part of customizing a line that could transform women’s skin!
Pre-cleansing with pure natural oils is proven to effectively break up all the bacteria, makeup, and buildup and leave your SKIN clean, glowing, and hydrated.
A common myth is that using oil on your skin will clog your pores or make your skin even more oily. The TRUTH is that oil dissolves oil! So not only will using the right oil on your skin disintegrate makeup (even waterproof makeup!) dirt, grime, and build up… it will also help to balance the skin and make it less oily. Just make sure you’re using the right kind!
As aforementioned.. cleansing morning and night using an ineffective method or a cleanser not suited for your skin type can actually be more harmful to your skin. So pre-cleansing ensures the effective cleansing your skin craves for a beautiful glowing complexion.
An oil based pre-cleanse is truly MAGIC! It dissolves buildup, removes junk that’s clogging your pores leading to inflammation, leading to acne or the breakdown of collagen and elastin (i.e. making your skin look dull, tired, and old).
Bottom line, YES. You do need a pre-cleanse.
Your SKIN will thank you!
Here’s how I do it:
